PNEUMONIA is a serious lung infection that causes fever, cough, difficulty breathing and fatigue.

Pneumonia Patients Assessed and Given Pneumococcal Vaccination Indicates percent of pneumonia patients 65 years and older that were screened and vaccinated to prevent pneumonia.  A pneumonia shot can help prevent pneumonia in the future, even for patients who have been hospitalized for pneumonia.

Pneumonia Patients Whose Initial Emergency Room Blood Culture Was Performed Prior To The Administration of The First Hospital Dose of Antibiotics

Indicates the percent of pneumonia patients that had blood drawn prior to the administration of antibiotics to look for the presence and nature of bacteria that may be causing the pneumonia.

Pneumonia Patients Given Smoking Cessation Advice/Counseling

Indicates the percent of patients that were smokers and were provided with advice or counseling to quit smoking.  Smoking harms the heart, lungs and blood vessels, worsens existing heart disease and is linked to heart failure.  Quitting may improve a patient’s condition.

Indicates the percent of pneumonia patients that received their antibiotics within 6 hours after arrival to the hospital.  Timely use of antibiotics can improve the treatment of pneumonia caused by bacteria.

Pneumonia Patients Assessed and Given Influenza Vaccination Indicates the percent of pneumonia patients (admitted during flu season of October through February) that were screened and given the flu shot if indicated prior to leaving the hospital.  A flu shot can help prevent flu in the future, even for patients who have been hospitalized.
