HEART FAILURE is a weakening of the heart’s pumping power.  With heart failure your body doesn’t get enough oxygen and nutrients to meet its needs.

Heart Failure Patients Given Discharge Instructions Indicates the percent of patients who were given specific information about their condition and care when they left the hospital.  This information would include education about medicines, diet, activities and important signs to watch for to prevent further or subsequent hospitalization.

Heart Failure Patients Given an Evaluation of Left Ventricular Systolic (LVS) Function

Indicates the percent of patients that received an in-depth evaluation of the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart, during their hospitalization or within the recent past.  This evaluation is necessary to prescribe the right treatment for their heart failure.

Heart Failure Patients Given an ACE Inhibitor or ARB for Left  Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction (LVSD)

Indicates the percent of patients that had problems with the heart pumping enough blood to the body who were prescribed medicine to improve their heart’s ability to pump blood.  The common medicines are angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).

Heart Failure Patients Given Smoking Cessation Advice/Counseling

Indicates the percent of patients that were smokers and were provided with advice or counseling to quit smoking.  Smoking harms the heart, lungs and blood vessels, worsens existing heart disease and is linked to heart failure.  Quitting may improve a patient’s condition.
