Quality Care for individualized needs
Extended Care Unit - Galion Community Hospital has responded to America’s changes in health care by designing The Extended Care Unit for those who still need supervised care, but who no longer need to be in a hospital bed.
The Extended Care Unit helps residents get back on their feet and return
home as quickly as possible and offers a level of service not available in other nursing homes. Galion Community Hospital laboratory, respiratory therapy, X-ray, pharmacy and life support teams are all immediately available. We provide a complete staff of therapists and a physician is available 24 hours a day.
The nurses and other staff of the Extended Care Unit not only provide clinical
care, but they also understand the importance of emotional support as part of the total recovery process.
Therapy options...for the road to recovery
Physical Therapy is aimed at assisting residents in gaining or regaining the strength, functional skills and mobility needed to live independently. Licensed Physical Therapists plan and supervise all physical therapy and are assisted by Licensed Physical Therapy Assistants.
Occupational Therapy concentrates on upper body functions, directing considerable attention to the skills needed to perform the practical activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing and dressing. Licensed Occupational Therapists plan and supervise all occupational therapy and are assisted by Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants.
Speech Therapy is provided by Licensed Speech Therapists who are certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association. Speech therapy focuses upon improving communication, cognitive skills and swallowing function. It is often necessary with problems related to strokes, tracheostomy, head injuries, progressive neurogenic diseases, plus voice and fluency disorders. This is determined by the residents’ individual needs.
Activities to aid in recovery
The Extended Care Unit promotes recovery by emphasizing “getting up”, “moving about”, and “becoming involved”. Activity therapy coordinates leisure activities to aid recovery. These programs are simply fun. However, the “fun factor” does not diminish the extent to which these programs stimulate residents intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Motivation arising from activities often accelerates the accomplishments of goals set by the other therapies. Activities are available to all residents as part of the daily life in the Extended Care Unit. Programs are designed with the recreational interests of residents.
