Those people who are recovering from a heart attack or heart surgery and those with stable angina, and heart transplants should be part of a cardiac rehabilitation program. Also, anyone at risk for developing coronary artery disease can benefit from a team approach to education and exercise. Back to top
How Will Cardiac Rehabilitation Help Me?
Studies have shown that individuals who participate in a structured, supervised rehabilitation program recover sooner and have fewer hospital admissions and may reduce the potential for further heart problems. Group members often find the support and friendship formed in cardiac rehabilitation as vitally important in continuing the recovery program.
Cardiac patients may be transferred back and forth between phases of rehabilitation as the disease progresses, regresses, or remains unchanged. Back to top
What Is The Cost For Rehabilitation?
Most major health insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid will reimburse all or part of the fees for cardiac rehabilitation. Participants are encouraged to contact their individual health insurance company to confirm reimbursement. The staff will be happy to discuss alternative financial arrangements with you. Back to top
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Provides What Services To Me?
Not only do we supervise your exercise program during Phase II, but we will help you learn heart healthy diet and life-style habits. Several videos and books are available on loan from our library. We can also help you get in touch with a dietician or provide recipes. Our purpose it to help you become more aware of your own personal risk factors and teach you how to change them. Back to top
Phases Of Cardiac Rehabilitation
Phase I
Phase I lasts from one to fourteen days, generally during hospitalization. It includes discharge planning, education and activity from admission through discharge, according to physician referral and standard treatment protocols.
Phase II
Phase II lasts up to twelve weeks. This is a physician-referred (doctor order needed) exercise and behavior modification program. The purpose of this phase is to decrease the risk of further cardiac events.
Participants attend exercise sessions that meet three times a week until personal goals are met. Under closely monitored conditions, each exercise session may include warm up and stretching exercises followed by progressive cardiovascular conditioning and muscle strengthening. The session ends with a cool-down period. In addition to the exercise and individual counseling sessions, information is provided on nutrition, stress management, medication compliance and risk factor modification. Call Galion Community Hospital at 468-0758 for further information and assistance.
